A Fabric that Morphs
By Jonathan Ringen of MetropolisMag.com
It seems like magic: a textile that morphs between
two completely different patterns depending on the angle from which
it is observed. Wanda Miglus, the Providence, Rhode Island-based
designer of the textile, declined to explain exactly how the weaving
process works, citing secrecy issues. But she did say that any two
images or patterns could be reproduced, in any fiber, using a normal
jacquard loom. (The prototype she showed shifted from a floral to
a highly geometric pattern.)
Miglus is actively seeking commercial applications for her remarkable invention.

The International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF)
is a four-day event that, every May, brings to New York City a design crowd
from around the world. It is a singular institution, less about contemporary
furniture than about exhibition of new designs, concepts and materials
hoping to find their way to the market, with
a potpourri of established European manufacturers thrown in for good measure.
The quality and caliber of the show reflects the ICFF's commitment to keeping
pace with the world of modern design and, more important, to providing
a venue for smaller designers to display their work. The ICFF Editors Awards—click
here for photos—are an accurate guide to the texture and breadth
of the work shown. Of the 16 awards handed out, four went to long-standing
DWR partners. We offer our congratulations to Magis (Body of Work), Pablo
Pardo (Lighting), Nani Marquina (Carpet and Flooring), and Heller (Outdoor).
The New Designer award went to molo designers Todd MacAllen and Stephanie
Forsythe for an insulated and elegant glass tea set design of unusual distinction.
Also worth noting is the student section of ICFF, where one sees coat hooks
and skeet shooting discs made from hardened concoctions of sugar and water,
walls of polystyrene drawers and more.
